Innovating Korea’s environmentally-friendly
shipbuilding and shipping industries, leading the world’s environmentally-friendly
shipbuilding and shipping industries

Since the Industrial Revolution, the development of human civilization has led to us emitting more greenhouse gases than ever. This has not only led to climate change which is reducing our quality of life, but has brought us to the point where even the very survival of the human race is in question. To respond to global warming, international discussions to achieve carbon neutrality is being held through the likes of the 2016 Paris Agreement and the 2019 Leaders Summit on Climate. Transitioning from a low-carbon economy to a carbon-free economy is no longer a choice, it is a necessity.

The International Maritime Organization, has set a goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping by 50% compared to 2008 levels by 2050 while enforcing the move to greenhouse gas emission regulations and green ships. In line with this, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries have established a multi-ministry 10-year Innovative Green Ship Technology Development Project Office, committing to fund it from 2022 to 2031.
The project office has established a technology development roadmap that reflects the opinions of industry, academia and research experts on analyzing the obstacles standing in the way of fulfilling the IMO’s environmental regulations, evaluating the impact assessment by country, strengthening capability and increasing funding for technology, evaluating economic feasibility and identifying the status and trends of the international shipping industry. Based on this roadmap, we are carrying out research and development.

The international interest in environmentally-friendly energy projects brought on by various environmental regulations has led to a paradigm shift in the shipbuilding and shipping industries. Subsequently, demand for green ship core systems and the core components that run such systems is increasing. Now is a critical period for attaining dominance in the future market by being first movers in green ship core technologies.
The project office will work tirelessly to produce results for Innovative Green Ship Technology Development so that Korea can lead the global shipbuilding and shipping industries and increase our national competitiveness.

The project office asks you to support the project office so that we can not only innovate the domestic green ships, and shipping industries but lead the global environmentally-friendly shipbuilding and shipping industries. We seek your active interest and participation so that Korean green ships, the results of the project office, can sail vigorously outward to the harbors of the world.
